THE GREEN HORNET

By day, Britt Reid was a successful newspaperman, by night he was the Green Hornet, a masked avenger determined to combat crime and hand out his own brand of justice. As a press publisher, Reid had access to inside information from both police and criminal sources, and he made full use of it to combat his foes. Kato, Reid’s faithful Japanese valet and the only person who knew his secret identity, rendered valuable assistance in the crusade against crime. Armed with a gas gun to incapacitate his enemies, the Green Hornet always had the upper hand. With a roaring speedster known as the Black Beauty, the vigilante avoided capture by the police and being unmasked by his inquisitive staff reporter, Mike Axford. The Green Hornet was one of three airwave heroes to originate from the Detroit station of WXYZ, alongside The Lone Ranger and Sergeant Preston of the Yukon. The Green Hornet wasn’t afraid to confront racketeers, corrupt lawyers, and crooked labor unions. During World War II his enemies included black-market operators, Nazi spies fifth columnists, and saboteurs. In December 1941, with the growing conflict overseas, his valet Kato’s nationality switched from Japanese to Filipino and the change was heavily emphasized on the program. In 1947, parents of young listeners had begun to voice their concerns about the character of the Hornet, whose disguise and vigilante methods made him appear more like master crook with a guilty conscience. Producers took the matter seriously and the premise was revised to have Britt Reid’s identity made known to a select few, not just his accomplice and valet, Kato. Reid’s father, Dan Reid, his father’s secretary, Linda Travis, Police Commissioner Higgins, and Reid’s own secretary, Miss Case all became aware of Britt Reid’s alter ego. These new allies kept his secret safe and protected him from exposure. By 1949, the Green Hornet was now smashing rackets on the waterfront, confronting juvenile delinquents, fighting Communists foes, and anyone else who, in the words of the opening narration, “sought to destroy our America.”

RAMBLIN’ MAN, by The Allman Brothers Band (1973)

Released in 1973, “Ramblin’ Man” was the Allman Brothers Band’s biggest success and one of the songs that helped define Southern rock. Written and sung by guitarist Dickey Betts, it reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stood out from the band’s earlier, blues material.

By the early 1970s, the Allman Brothers were known for their live performances and extended jams. “Ramblin’ Man” took a different approach. It was shorter, more structured, and leaned clearly toward country rock, with acoustic guitars and a singable chorus. The shift made the band more radio-friendly and influenced other Southern rock and country-rock artists that followed.

The song’s lyrics focus on constant travel and an unwillingness to settle down, a theme that fit the era. Car culture, road movies, and open-highway imagery were common in early-’70s pop culture, and “Ramblin’ Man” fit easily into that landscape.

This song was referenced in the Nickelodeon Cartoon Hey Arnold! In the episode “The Journal,” when discussion of the title Character’s birth springs up, his grandmother responds, “I Thought he was born in the back seat of a Greyhound bus going down highway 41.” This song also appears in the 1973 movie The Exorcist.
