FRONTIER GENTLEMAN

Frontier Gentleman is a critically acclaimed CBS radio Western series that aired from February to November 1958, created, written, and directed by Antony Ellis. The program follows the adventures of J.B. Kendall (played masterfully by John Dehner), a cultured and observant English journalist working as a correspondent for The London Times. Set during the 1870s, Kendall travels throughout the untamed American West to document the raw and often violent realities of frontier life for his readers back in Great Britain. Unlike traditional Western heroes of the era, Kendall approaches the turbulent territories with a unique blend of aristocratic charm, intellectual curiosity, and sharp wit.

Beneath his refined exterior as a newspaper reporter, however, Kendall is a former British Army veteran who is exceptionally skilled with a firearm, frequently finding himself forced to actively participate in the dangerous events he is sent to cover. Throughout the series, his journalistic assignments bring him into contact with a rich tapestry of fictional outlaws, drifters, and townspeople, as well as legendary historical figures such as Wyatt Earp, Jesse James, Calamity Jane, and Wild Bill Hickok. Highlighted by a memorable trumpet theme composed by Jerry Goldsmith, the program stood out for its mature storytelling, atmospheric soundscapes, and distinct outsider perspective on the closing days of the American frontier.

Turn! Turn! Turn!” by The Byrds

As summer gives way to autumn, few songs seem more appropriate than “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by The Byrds.

Released in 1965, the song became a number-one hit and helped establish The Byrds as one of the defining groups of the folk-rock movement. But what makes this recording truly remarkable is that most of its lyrics weren’t written in the 1960s at all. They come directly from the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible, a text that is more than two thousand years old.

The famous opening lines remind us that life moves in cycles: “To everything there is a season.” Those words have resonated with generations because they speak to a simple truth. Times change, people change, and circumstances change, but the rhythms of life continue.

While the lyrics may be ancient, The Byrds gave them a distinctly modern sound. Roger McGuinn’s jangling twelve-string guitar became the song’s signature, creating a bright and memorable backdrop for a message that had already stood the test of time.

The song also arrived during a period of tremendous change in America. The mid-1960s were filled with social and cultural upheaval, and listeners found comfort in a message that emphasized balance, perspective, and the idea that every season eventually gives way to another.

Over the decades, “Turn! Turn! Turn!” has remained a staple of oldies and classic rock radio. Its message feels just as relevant today as it did when it first topped the charts.

As September arrives and another season begins, “Turn! Turn! Turn!” serves as a gentle reminder that life is always moving forward. More than sixty years after its release, The Byrds’ recording remains a timeless reflection on change, renewal, and the seasons we all experience.
