As the prestigious Emmy Awards draw near, ‘Ripley,’ the TV series, stands out with an impressive 13 nominations. This acclaimed series, now available for streaming on Netflix, promises a viewing experience of the highest caliber.
“Ripley” is a mystery drama miniseries based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. It’s an 8-part series rated TV-MA for Mature Audiences and unsuitable for kids and teens.
Set against the backdrop of 1960s Italy, ‘Ripley’ follows the story of Tom Ripley, portrayed by the talented Andrew Scott, who is tasked with bringing a wealthy man’s son back to the US. The series also features the stellar performances of Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn.
The series, a masterpiece written and directed by Steven Zaillian, an Oscar winner for Schindler’s List, and Robert Elswit, the director of photography, an Oscar winner for “There Will Be Blood,” is a unique blend of classic noir, Hitchcock, and Italian cinema giants. Shot in black and white, the series is a visual treat and a lesson in beautiful filmmaking.
The Bottom Line: I’m in 3 ½ stars out of four. I watched the show because of Andrew Scott’s performance. His portrayal of Tom Ripley is not just incredible, but also absolutely terrifying. His performance alone is worth the watch, and I found myself so enthralled with the series that I binge-watched it. Just know that there is murder and violence throughout.
