THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES

by Carl Amari

Created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the legendary, violin-playing detective and his loyal companion were first heard on the air in a 1922 local production of “The Sign of the Four” by pioneer station WGY (Schenectady, New York).  Doyle wrote 56 short stories and four novels based on the Holmes character.  Radio scriptwriter Edith Meiser handled all the adaptations during the 1930s and when material was running low, the Conan Doyle estate gave her permission to create original mysteries.  The stories have been dramatized so often and by so many performers in every known entertainment medium that listing them would require volumes of footnotes.  Of all the Sherlock Holmes dramas broadcast on radio, however, the most popular starred Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce (broadcast from 1939 until 1946).  To many, these fine Hollywood actors represented the quintessential Holmes and Dr. Watson.  Nigel Bruce, playing a retired Watson, usually functioned as the narrator, entertaining listeners with accounts of his adventures alongside the eccentric detective.  Following Rathbone’s departure from the role in 1946, Tom Conway played Holmes to Nigel Bruce’s Dr. Watson.  In 1947, both Conway and Bruce were replaced by John Stanley and Alfred Shirley, with Shirley replaced by Ian Martin for the 1948-49 season. Regardless of who performed the roles of Holmes and Watson, the quality of the stories remained constant. Well-crafted, atmospheric, and never sensationalized, these were good, solid mysteries and the millions of listeners who sat back in their easy chairs, cup of hot tea or coffee in hand, thoroughly enjoyed them.

LEND ME YOUR EARS by Lisa Wolf

The Chain, Fleetwood mac

RELEASED: 1977

“The Chain’ basically came out of a jam. That song was put together as distinct from someone literally sitting down and writing a song. It was very much collectively a band composition… But it was really something that just came out of us playing in the studio. Originally we had no words to it. And it really only became a song when Stevie wrote some. She walked in one day and said, ‘I’ve written some words that might be good for that thing you were doing in the studio the other day.’”  ~ Mick Fleetwood

Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 song “The Chain” stands as one of the most iconic tracks in rock history. Released on the band’s legendary album Rumours, the song has grown into a cultural symbol, known not only for its powerful sound but also for its lasting presence in popular media.

“The Chain” is unique in Fleetwood Mac’s catalog because it is the only song on Rumours credited to all five band members. The track was pieced together from various fragments of other songs, reflecting the band’s intense and often troubled relationships at the time.

The line “I can still hear you saying / You would never break the chain” became a defining lyric, expressing both the pain and resilience that marked the band’s dynamic.

Over the decades, “The Chain” has remained relevant, thanks in part to its frequent use in film, television, and sports. One of its most notable resurgences came from its appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), which introduced the song to a new generation.

It has also become a staple in sports broadcasting, especially for Formula 1 coverage in the UK, where its iconic bass breakdown often accompanies high-stakes race footage.

Decades later, The Chain” remains a staple of classic rock, celebrated for its passion, craftsmanship, and the story it tells both musically and historically.
