VENTURA HIGHWAY, by AMERICA
RELEASED: 1972
“It was 1963 when I was in seventh grade, we got a flat tire and we’re standing on the side of the road and I was staring at this highway sign. It said ‘Ventura’ on it and it just stuck with me. It was a sunny day and the ocean there, all of it.” ~ America member Dewey Bunnell, Writer
“Ventura Highway” is a soft rock song released in 1972 by the band America on their album “Homecoming.” Written by band members Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley, the song was inspired by a real trip along California’s coastal highway. The track features acoustic guitar and tight vocal harmonies that became characteristic of the band’s sound.
The song tells the story of a journey, capturing the feeling of road travel and personal freedom typical of early 1970s rock music. The track gained significant radio play and has remained a staple of classic rock stations. The song’s popularity helped establish America as a significant band in the early 1970s music scene.
Long before Prince used it, America incorporated the phrase “Purple Rain” into a lyric, as they sing here:
Wishin’ on a falling star
Waitin’ for the early train
Sorry boy, but I’ve been hit by purple rain
You can watch a live performance of “Ventura Highway” from the Hollywood Bowl in 1975:
